Miss Wyoming Uk Edition
Published in Paperback by Harpercollins Publisher ()
Author: Douglas Coupland
Average review score:

masterly written and unusually entertaining
This is certainly the best book I have read from Douglas Coupland and one of the best books by a contemporary writer. The characters are very entertaining. They each have their peculiarities and flaws, which makes them so lifelike. The story itself might be a little farfetched, but aren't we all looking for that in books? With other books I read from mr. Coupland, I always had difficulty with the lack of action, but this book is so action-packed that I simply could not put it down. This is modern literature and not just for our fast and furious MTV-influenced youth. It's about a pair of weird people who act just like you and I would in a similair situation as theirs.
Just enjoy it, I did!!!

Nature's Yellowstone
Published in Textbook Binding by University of New Mexico Press (January, 1974)
Author: Richard A. Bartlett
Average review score:

Excellent, for the serious reader
The book has two main sections. The first is a review of the geographic features. The second is a history up to the creation of the park in 1872. The early history, of fur trappers and explorers, is the meat of the book and is fascinating. I'll admit the book is a bit of a slow read, but I couldn't find any other book with near the detail that's in this one. Strangely, it was not available at the stores in the park when I visited last week.

No Comfort in Victory: A Sheriff Harry Starbranch Mystery
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (August, 1995)
Authors: Greg Bean and Gregory Bean
Average review score:

A good start on a very good series!
Harry Starbranch, an ex-homicide cop from Denver, moved to Victory, Wyoming to escape big city mayhem and murder. Now he's sheriff of a county where stock rustling seems to be one of the leading occupations. When a rancher's daughter gets killed along with one of the rustlers who was robbing the ranch, Harry gets the feeling there is more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye and that some of the area ranchers have a shared secret. Bean does a fine job of evoking a sense of place in this book. Everywhere Harry has to go seems like a long way away and he spends a lot of time on the county roads. There are some good minor characters in the book. Harry rents an old farmhouse from a great old lady who's far from ready for a retirement community. He's still in love with his ex-wife and she visits from Denver whenever she can. Sheriff Starbranch is a well rounded, interesting character solving a puzzling mystery with a satifying conclusion. After a bit of an uneven start, this turned out to be a very good book. This is the first book in the series.

When Ryder McCall found the strawberry-blonde unconscious on his land, he knew she was after either his hide or the secret he was hiding, On the run from the law and wary of strangers, Ryder wasn't used to visitors- especially not outspoken, lost ladies. Enjoying the Series - but Ready to Move Forward
I have read each of the Hannah of Fort Bridger Series, and am finishing up book 7 this week. I have really enjoyed the Christian basis of the series, though sometimes it seems a little too contrived and saccharin. Sometimes while reading, you think people really don't talk like this, especially when attesting to their faith. It is easy at times to 'guess' at the storyline and then 3 pages later see that it has happened.

Another issue that has bothered me about the series is that we are in book 6 and the baby that Hannah found she had conceived in book 1 has yet to be born. It is annoying how slow the pace of the books are, and even though they are adding new storylines and characters in each book - it would be nice to see Hannah's storyline developed and moving forward. However, I am still giving it a 4, as I have enjoyed the books, and am moving quickly through the series.

Book 6 deals with an influenza epidemic hitting the fort, town, and Crow Indian villiage near by, and the worst weather to hit the area in a generation which makes getting much needed food and medical supplies impossible. I found the book to be well-researched and enjoyed some of the history behind it - i.e. the medical proceedures used in treating the epidemic, the way the indian village contracted and treated the 'white man's disease', the rationing of food, etc.

This series is definately worth the read, as it is hard to find good Christian fiction. I would recommend these for a light read, however, or for a Youth in your life. They remind me a bit of the historical Christian fiction written by Janette Oke (Love comes Softly, etc.), though I enjoy Mrs. Oke's books a bit more as her's have a quicker pace and more realistic conversation.

When Esther Morris Headed West: Women, Wyoming, and the Right to Vote
Published in School & Library Binding by Holiday House (September, 2001)
Authors: Connie Nordhielm Wooldridge and Jacqueline Rogers
Average review score:

Here's a story everyone needs to know about
I am so glad this book was written. This is an important part of American history that all of us should know. Esther Morris went west and became part of the movement in Wyoming Territory to win women the right to vote and hold office. Then, to help solidify their position, she applied for and became a Justice of the Peace. She held this position until the next election. The book is more about the suffrage movement and its early beginnings in the American West than it is about Esther Morris' life. But, it's information I didn't know and now, would like to know more about. This will be a good book to read to students and a good lead-in to research more about this interesting topic. I like the illlustrations which enhanced the story.
